Purpose:

This program is geared toward clinicians who are FEES competent who want to sharpen their scoring and interpretation of FEES exams. A review of scoping techniques to achieve optimal view will be covered. Updates in research, protocols, scoring and interpretation will be introduced, as well as updates in using endoscopy to guide treatment. Participants will have an opportunity to sharpen their skills by practicing scoring recorded FEES exams. Case studies will be provided with treatment considerations.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Be ready to incorporate new FEES protocols into your practice.
  2. Describe scoping techniques to obtain optimal views.
  3. Identify normal versus abnormal swallowing.
  4. Score FEES exams using a scoring worksheet.
  5. Apply the results of the FEES exam to make meaningful recommendations
  6. Discuss case studies using FEES with different patient population
  7. Incorporate scoring and interpretation into a new model of dysphagia.
  8. Describe new uses of endoscopy as a biofeedback tool.

About the Instructor:

Dr. Susan Langmore, PhD, CCC-SLP, BCS-S pioneered the implementation of fiberoptic endoscopy for the evaluation of swallowing. She has used FEES with all types of adult patients and dysphagia etiologies, and has worked in ICU, inpatient, outpatient, and nursing home settings. Dr. Langmore is a Professor of Otolaryngology at Boston University. She has multiple ongoing research projects and lectures internationally on dysphagia.
