Endoscopy Bootcamp: A Clinician’s Guide to FEES (3118-001)
Need a brush up on your FEES skills? During this one-day course on November 2, 2018 from 7:30AM-5:30PM in Raleigh, NC, the instructors will review a FEES Protocol, normal swallowing in adults and geriatrics, and use of rating scales for FEES. Special considerations for the medical speech pathologist will be discussed. Case examples will be provided, along with opportunities to practice FEES interpretation and supervised scope passing. This course is offered for 0.85 ASHA CEUs (8.5 hours), Intermediate Level, Professional Area.
Following this course, participants will be able to:
- Perform a FEES following a protocol including non-swallowing tasks.
- Summarize normal swallowing in adults and geriatrics.
- Outline important lab values to consider.
- Describe various oxygen delivery systems.
- Interpret FEES exams at a beginner to intermediate level.
- Demonstrate comfort with handling the endoscope, maneuvering between pre and post swallow positions, and performing an exam.
About the Instructors:
This course is taught by Beth Cormell, M.S., CCC-SLP and Selena Reece, M.S., CCC-SLP, BCS-S.
Beth Cormell, M.S.,CCC-SLP has been a Speech-Language Pathologist for over 25 years. She graduated from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, and is currently working as a clinical SLP at UNCRex Healthcare in Raleigh, NC. She initiated the FEES program at UNCRex in 1997, and since, has completed thousands of FEES. Beth not only trains all UNCRex speech staff on FEES, but has also been instrumental in training clinicians and implementing new FEES program throughout the country. She has taught FEES courses for more than 18 years, has presented short courses on FEES implementation and application at NCSHLA’s Annual Convention and at the ASHA Convention.
Selena Reece received her Master’s degree from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2003 and became a Board Certified Specialist in Swallowing in 2015. She has worked in acute care, outpatient, and inpatient rehabilitation settings. She currently serves as the Director of Educational Resources for Carolina Speech Pathology, while carrying an active caseload providing mobile FEES services. Selena has been training clinicians on FEES throughout the U.S. since 2012 and was featured on Swallow Your Pride Podcast, Episode 18. She has been deemed competent for supervision and training in FEES by a board certified Otolaryngologist.
